A Conversation Between Drew Amoroso & Jane McCahill
Post authored by Drew Amoroso for Carr Workplaces
As a new lawyer, we often become so caught up in trying to learn how to think and act like a lawyer that we forget what’s at the heart of the legal profession: people.
The legal industry is truly a services industry, and at the end of the day our work is in service of others.
It’s important to remember that a key aspect of being a lawyer is always acting with your client’s best interest at heart.
Listen to them, communicate with them, and give them the right advice even when you know they don’t want to hear it. Keeping this perspective as a through line will help influence many of the decisions you must make on a day-to-day basis.
This idea applies to both our clients and our colleagues. There are lots of lawyers, but the legal industry is surprisingly small and inter-connected – which means the people you work with will remember you.
Your efforts to be professional and collegial from the start will not go unnoticed and the time you invest in building relationships and a strong network will yield exponential returns.
Remember that on the other end of your work and your efforts to hone your craft are people, organizations, and communities who need your help.
I had the pleasure of connecting with Jane McCahill of McCahill Law Office, to dive deeper into how she has fostered relationships while working within a shared office environment and the tools she uses to build a thriving practice.
